My work deals with the influence of demographic, economic and spatial phenomena in Tokyo, Japan, such as aging and population subtraction and specifically vacant or abandoned houses (“Akiya” in Japanese). Now days in Tokyo there are 820,000 vacant houses and apartments due to different and diverse reasons, population subtraction, difficulty in keeping real estate properties value for a long time, competition with new building projects, change of trends and fashions, high inheritance taxes. More and more houses stay empty. The action itself of getting inside the houses, gives the project its meaning. The houses were probably used as a living space for a family. Getting into a private place that is no longer functioning in its original use gives the feeling of trespassing.
